Coaching & Psychology

Coaching cannot be learned by watching videos, because the skill is what you do in the room when a client says something you were not expecting. Every programme in this subject requires you to coach, be recorded, and be assessed on it — which is uncomfortable, and is the only thing that reliably produces a competent practitioner. This is also the subject where the gap between a marketed certificate and an assessed credential is widest. The verdict upfront: if a course never records your practice, it is selling a credential, not training a coach.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

Coaching works with people who are functioning and want to move forward on a goal. Therapy treats psychological distress and disorder. The practical line is clinical need: when a client's difficulty requires treatment rather than support, a coach must recognise it and refer rather than continue.

This boundary is not a formality. Coaching is unregulated in the UK, so nothing external stops a coach working well beyond their competence — the restraint has to come from training.

Our therapeutic skills programmes are taught by a chartered psychologist and assess referral judgement explicitly, because it is the competency most likely to cause harm when it is missing. For the regulatory picture on coaching specifically, see do you need a qualification to be a life coach.

Is coaching a regulated profession in the UK?

No. Anyone may call themselves a life coach, executive coach or wellbeing coach in the UK without qualification or registration. Credentials from bodies such as the International Coaching Federation and the EMCC are voluntary, which is exactly why the assessed ones carry weight with informed buyers.

Unregulated does not mean ungoverned. Informed corporate buyers increasingly ask for ICF or EMCC credentials and for evidence of assessed practice hours. A weekend certificate satisfies neither question.

The life coach career guide sets out what buyers actually check before hiring, which is often stricter than any legal minimum.

What makes a coaching qualification credible?

Assessed practice, above all else. A credible coaching qualification requires you to submit recorded coaching sessions, marked against a published competency framework by a named and credentialled assessor. A qualification awarded merely for completing modules tells a prospective client only that you finished watching something.

Check three things on any syllabus: how many hours of live practice, who marks the recordings, and whether the marking rubric is published. If any answer is vague, treat the certificate as CPD attendance, not practitioner training.

Our Life Coaching Accreditation programme aligns with ICF competencies; the separate application process for an ICF credential is described in how to get an ICF credential in the UK.

Who should skip a coaching certificate course?

Anyone who needs to treat psychological distress — that requires therapy training, not coaching. Anyone who believed a weekend certificate would satisfy corporate procurement asking for ICF hours. Anyone unwilling to be recorded coaching peers should not enrol in assessed practice programmes. Anyone seeking a regulated title should look at counselling or clinical routes instead.

Skip self-paced "life coach certification" products if your goal is paying clients who check credentials. Skip courses with no triad or supervision hours if you have never coached live. Skip programmes that conflate coaching with therapy techniques without teaching referral.

A coaching certificate is the wrong purchase if your real question is "how do I become a therapist?" — see can a short CBT course make you a therapist for where CBT skills fit.

How should you choose coaching training in the UK?

Match the training to your intended client and the credential buyers will ask for. Corporate executive coaching buyers often want ICF-aligned hours; wellbeing niches may care more about assessed niche competence. If the course never names a competency framework or a marking rubric, assume it is informational only.

Prefer live cohort delivery for coaching because triads and real-time feedback are the training — theory modules are the easy part.

Common questions

Will I be recorded coaching?

Yes, on every coaching programme. Recordings are reviewed by your tutor and, in the practice triads, by two peers. It is the single most useful and least uncomfortable part of the training.

Can I get an ICF credential from this?

Our Life Coaching Accreditation programme is designed to align with ICF competencies and gives you the assessed hours and recordings you need, but the ICF credential itself is awarded by the ICF on its own application process, not by us. We will not claim otherwise.

Is CPD accreditation enough for coaching clients?

CPD hours prove attendance, not competence. Corporate buyers and informed individuals increasingly ask for assessed practice and ICF or EMCC alignment. Treat CPD-only certificates as supplementary, not as a practitioner qualification.

Do you need a life-coach qualification?

Life coaching is unregulated in the UK, so no qualification is legally required. Corporate buyers and informed clients still ask who marked your work.

Answer

How do you get an ICF coaching credential in the UK?

The ICF awards its credentials directly, not through training providers. Here is what an application actually requires, and which UK providers give you a route.

Answer

ICF vs EMCC coaching credentials

Neither is legally required in the UK. Corporate buyers usually name ICF. EMCC is the European alternative with supervision. Pick the market first.
