Can a short CBT course make you a therapist in the UK?
Short answer
No. Becoming a CBT therapist in the UK requires accredited clinical training and supervised client hours, typically on a BABCP-recognised route. A short practitioner-skills programme does not meet that standard. It can still be useful for coaches, managers and pastoral staff who will not claim the title. The damage is done when the certificate implies otherwise.
What does CBT therapist training actually require?
Accredited clinical training at diploma level or above, supervised practice with real clients, and usually a route toward BABCP accreditation. It takes years part-time, not weeks. NHS Talking Therapies posts name those routes in the person spec. A marketplace 'CBT diploma' with no placement is a different product, whatever the certificate is called.
BABCP publishes its own accreditation standards. Read those, not a course sales page, if the destination is 'CBT therapist'. We are not a BABCP-accredited clinical training provider and do not claim to be.
Counselling and psychotherapy have their own placement-based routes via BACP and UKCP. Those are also not a short online course. Our counselling subject hub exists to say that plainly.

What is a short CBT skills course actually for?
It teaches cognitive and behavioural techniques, formulation, and referral judgement for people whose existing roles involve structured conversations — coaches, HR, teachers, support workers. That is a real job. It is not the same job as being a therapist, and a reputable provider says so in the not-for list before checkout.
Our CBT Practitioner Skills programme is 10 weeks, 22 live hours, taught by a chartered psychologist and BABCP-accredited therapist. Assessment is a recorded role-play plus a written formulation with an explicit scope-of-practice analysis. Referral judgement is weighted most heavily. A pass does not make you a CBT therapist. The not-for list says that in one line.
Who should skip a short CBT course?
Anyone whose goal is BABCP accreditation or an NHS therapist post — start from the BABCP course list. Anyone unwilling to be observed practising. Anyone who wanted to advertise as a CBT therapist after a few evenings. We would rather lose that sale than blur the line; the line is the product.
Also skip it if you wanted counselling training. We do not offer counselling because we cannot provide supervised placements. A CBT-informed skills course is not a slower version of a counselling diploma.
Is it legal to use CBT techniques without being a therapist?
Using structured, evidence-informed techniques in a coaching, pastoral or workplace role is not in itself unlawful. Presenting yourself as a CBT therapist, treating a clinical population, or crossing into diagnosis is where harm and legal exposure sit. The contract and the verbal contracting in session have to say what you are not.
The presentations that most often get people into trouble are depression, trauma, eating disorders and suicidality. A skills course that does not spend real time on those boundaries is not a skills course. It is a technique sampler.
How does this differ from counselling training?
Counselling works therapeutically with distress over time and, in practice, needs BACP or UKCP registration via placement hours. Coaching works with functioning people on forward-looking goals and is unregulated. CBT is a modality. Practising it as a therapist needs accredited clinical training. Practising it as a technique inside another role needs an honest scope.

How should you choose between a short CBT course and therapist training?
Write down the title you need to hold in twelve months. If it is CBT therapist, start from the BABCP-recognised course list and plan for years, not weeks. If it is coach, manager or pastoral lead who uses CBT tools without claiming the title, a short assessed skills programme is the honest product. Do not buy the middle.

The expensive mistake is paying for a short course while planning to advertise as a therapist. The certificate will not survive a register check, and the client will not know the difference until something goes wrong. If you cannot name the destination title, use the credential checker before you pay anyone.

Will this programme count towards BABCP accreditation?
No. Do not enrol expecting it to. If BABCP accreditation is the goal, choose a BABCP-recognised course with placement hours.
Why do you teach CBT skills at all then?
Because coaches and workplace practitioners use these tools already, often badly. Teaching them with a named clinical marker and a hard referral line is safer than leaving the market to weekend PDFs.
Can I call myself a CBT coach?
The title is unprotected, which is why it is risky. If you use it, your contract must still say you are not a therapist and must name when you refer. Ambiguous titles are how clients get harmed.
