How to become a career coach in the UK

What a career coach actually does, whether the title is regulated, what buyers check, and a realistic route to a first paying client.

Career coaching is not a regulated profession in the UK. No qualification or licence is legally required to use the title or charge. Recruitment and some statutory careers-guidance roles sit in different frameworks. That legal freedom is why the market is crowded with diplomas that never watch you coach, and why informed buyers ask who marked your sessions.

The realistic route

  1. Decide whether you are coaching, placing, or advising

Recruitment fills vacancies. Statutory guidance serves a public-duty brief. Career coaching helps a functioning adult decide a next role and take the actions a search requires, without guaranteeing a job. If you blur those, you will write a brochure you cannot defend. Pick the job before you pick the course, or you will buy the wrong credential for the clients you actually want.

  2. Get assessed on recorded sessions

Ask for the rubric and the marker's credential. If they cannot produce both, you are buying a library. Recorded sessions that can fail are the slow part and the part a corporate outplacement buyer will ask about. A multiple-choice career diploma has left that part out because marking costs money.

  3. Write a contract that does not promise a job

Professional indemnity is effectively required. Your contract should say you are not a recruiter and should name when you refer — visa, clinical depression, a legal dispute. Ambiguous outcome language is how this niche generates complaints. Write the limits before the first paid session, not after a client asks why they are still unemployed.

  4. Learn to say you do not know a labour market

Invented salary bands and 'guaranteed' interviews are how career coaches lose trust. A sourced conversation about demand is the work. If you have not checked a sector, say so and look it up together. That sentence is a competency, not a personality trait.

  5. Treat the first year as a business

Most new coaches undercharge and have no pipeline. A narrow offer — redundancy, internal mobility, or a sector you actually know — beats a generic 'find your passion' brand. Employer-paid outplacement is a different sales motion from consumer coaching. Pick one channel and work it for six months.

What does a career coach actually do?

A career coach contracts a piece of work, screens for problems that are not vocational, and helps a client tell a next-role story they can use in a search. They do not place people into jobs, guarantee interviews, or practise therapy under a warmer title. The useful ones can say that in the first session without flinching.

Typical work includes intake, narrative, applications as thinking rather than rewriting, and interview practice. When an employer pays, the contract has three parties and a reporting limit. That is a skill, not a template you download once.

Do you need qualifications to become a career coach?

Not legally. The title is unprotected. Commercially, buyers ask who marked your practice and whether you invent labour-market claims. A weekend certificate satisfies neither question. Treat qualification as a commercial requirement, not a legal one, and buy the assessed version.

ICF credentials are awarded by the ICF, not by training schools. They help in some corporate buys. They are not a government licence. Whether you need one depends on the clients you want, not on the law.

How much does a career coach earn in the UK?

Published, credible UK-wide earnings data for career coaches specifically is thin, so we will not invent a band. Income follows client acquisition, not the certificate. Employer-paid work and a narrow offer usually beat a generic consumer brand. If a course quotes a salary, ask for the survey.

What we can say: recruitment salaries are a different job. Do not use them as a proxy for coaching income. Price from a costed target, and expect the first year to be building a pipeline rather than replacing a salary.

Common questions

Is career coaching the same as life coaching?

It shares coaching skills. The labour-market and employer-paid work is specific. Many practitioners do both. The training should still assess the career-specific contract.

Can I do this without HR experience?

Yes. HR experience helps with employer-paid work and is not a legal requirement. Assessed practice is the filter.
