What an ADHD coach actually does, why the title is unprotected, why you must not diagnose, and a realistic route into adult coaching.
ADHD coach is not a protected title. Diagnosis of ADHD is a clinical process. No coaching certificate creates a diagnostic right. School SEND roles and the designated SENCO award sit in education employment law and are a different job. Weak training in this niche is not merely useless — it is how coaches end up confirming a diagnosis they are not qualified to make.
The realistic route
Decide you will not diagnose
If that sentence feels like a limitation rather than the job, this is the wrong niche. You will coach people who already have a diagnosis, or who are on a waiting list, without speculating. Write that into the contract before you take payment. Advertising that implies assessment is how complaints start.
Get assessed on recordings, not on ADHD facts
You can learn executive-function tips from a book. You cannot learn whether you stayed in scope when a client asked you to confirm they have ADHD. Ask for the rubric, the marker, and whether a fail is possible. Awareness diplomas skip that part.
Build a referral map before you have a client
GP, ADHD clinic, crisis services, and when to stop. 'I would probably suggest they see someone' is not a protocol. Name the wording you will use. Professional indemnity is effectively required for paid work. Insurers ask about scope; your website should match it.
Do not confuse this with a school job

Workplace coaching, students in higher education, or private adults with a diagnosis are different businesses. 'ADHD coach' as a generic brand is how you compete with every diploma graduate on price. A defined scope finds clients faster and keeps you out of diagnostic theatre.
What does an ADHD coach actually do?
An ADHD coach helps a diagnosed adult, or an adult on a clinical pathway, work with attention, time, tasks and environment inside a coaching contract. They do not diagnose, prescribe, or replace a clinic. The useful ones can say that in the first session, in writing, without dressing it up as a second opinion.
Typical work includes externalising systems, session structure that respects attention, and workplace or study requests the client has chosen to make. When medication, crisis or an undiagnosed presentation is the actual issue, the coach refers.
Do you need qualifications to become an ADHD coach?
Not legally. The title is unprotected. Commercially, clients and employers ask whether you diagnose, who trained you, and whether anyone marked your work. A weekend awareness diploma satisfies none of those questions. Treat qualification as a commercial and safety requirement.
Lived experience of ADHD can help and is not a credential. Assessed practice is. Combining both is common. Substituting lived experience for a diagnostic right is the failure mode.

Can I coach children?
This pathway is adult coaching. Child work sits closer to clinical and educational roles with different duties. Do not treat an adult coaching certificate as a paediatric licence.
Can I coach while someone waits for assessment?
