How to become a counsellor in the UK
People search for counselling courses because they want to help, and because the marketplace is happy to sell a diploma that sounds like the career. Qualifying as a counsellor is a multi-year pathway with supervised client hours and, in practice, BACP or UKCP registration. The verdict upfront: if there are no supervised client hours, it is not a counselling qualification.

What does qualifying as a counsellor in the UK actually require?
A substantial diploma or degree, hundreds of supervised placement hours, and usually personal therapy requirements, then registration with a body such as BACP or UKCP. It commonly takes three to four years part-time. There is no honest weekend version. The placement is the part no online marketplace can manufacture on its own.

What is a counselling-skills certificate actually for?
Better listening in a role you already have: management, pastoral work, HR, teaching support. It is not a counsellor identity. Used that way it is valuable. Used as a shortcut to private practice it is a mis-purchase, and the certificate will not rescue the mismatch when a client is in clinical distress.

Who should skip an online counselling diploma?
Anyone who needed BACP or UKCP registration and cannot see a written placement plan. Anyone whose employer named those bodies. Anyone unwilling to do years of part-time training if that is the real goal. Skills certificates remain useful for managers; they are the wrong lane for a change of professional identity.
Skip if the marketing shows NHS rooms and the syllabus has no client hours. That gap is the product.

Does The Study Guild train counsellors?

Is counselling a protected title?
No. Registration is still what employers and referrers check. Treat BACP or UKCP as the practical standard even though the law does not require it.

No. A CBT therapist needs accredited clinical training and supervised hours. A short skills course must not claim that title.
