When Centre of Excellence is the better choice
Choose Centre of Excellence if you want to explore a subject cheaply before committing, if you need a very specific niche subject we do not teach, if you cannot commit to fixed weekly session times, or if your budget is genuinely under £100. Their catalogue breadth is something we will never match, and paying £30 to find out whether crystal healing or calligraphy interests you is a completely rational decision. Our model only makes sense if you intend to practise professionally and need assessed competence rather than an introduction.
Which is better, The Study Guild or Centre of Excellence?
Neither, in the abstract. Centre of Excellence is better for exploring a subject cheaply across a very wide catalogue. The Study Guild is better for training to practise professionally with assessed competence and a named tutor. They are different products at different prices solving genuinely different problems.
We think comparison pages that conclude "we win on everything" are worthless, so here is the short version of where each model actually holds up.
Centre of Excellence has real advantages we cannot match: catalogue breadth, a much lower entry price, no schedule to commit to, and a large existing community. If you want to try six subjects this year, they are the obvious choice and we are not.
Our advantages are narrower and deeper: a named specialist teaching live, a capped cohort, and work that somebody qualified actually marks. That combination costs more to deliver, which is why it costs more to buy.
Why is The Study Guild so much more expensive?
Because live tuition and human marking have a per-learner cost that recorded content does not. A self-paced course can be sold to ten thousand people at no additional cost. A capped cohort with a specialist tutor marking every submission cannot, and pricing it as though it could would mean not delivering it.
This is the honest economics rather than a positioning claim. Twenty hours of live tuition from a credentialled specialist, plus individual written feedback on two assessed submissions, has a floor cost per learner. Our price is set from that floor.
It also explains why we do not discount. A discount on a marginal-cost-zero product costs the seller nothing. A discount on a capped cohort with a paid specialist either takes a seat from someone who paid full price, or reduces what the tutor is paid to deliver it.
Are Centre of Excellence qualifications recognised?
Their courses carry accreditation marks from established bodies, which means the courses have been assessed against those bodies' standards. Whether any given employer or client recognises the result depends on the sector, and in unregulated fields such as coaching there is no statutory register for anyone to check against.
This point is widely misunderstood and it is worth being precise rather than dismissive.
An accreditation mark from a body such as CPD or QLS is a genuine third-party assessment of a course against that body's criteria. It is not a regulated qualification, and it is not the same thing as a degree, a diploma from a professional body with a register, or a licence to practise.
In regulated professions, none of these providers — including us — can confer the right to practise. In unregulated professions such as coaching, what buyers respond to is generally who taught the course and whether the work was marked. That is the axis we compete on, not the logo.
Why does Centre of Excellence discount so heavily, and does it matter?
Frequent promotional pricing is a normal strategy for high-volume digital catalogues and is not evidence of poor quality. It does have one practical consequence for buyers: the list price stops being informative, so it is worth checking what the course actually sells for before comparing it to anything.
We have taken a different approach and charge one price all year. That is a deliberate positioning choice rather than a criticism — we would rather nobody who enrolled last month discovers they paid more than you did.
