What a workplace mental-health first-contact role can honestly do, why it is not MHFA instructor licensing, and how it differs from being a therapist.
There is no protected title of workplace first-aider or wellbeing officer. Employers still have legal duties for work-related stress. Mental Health First Aid instructor status is a licensed product owned by MHFA England. A generic diploma cannot confer it. First-contact protocol design is a different, still-useful job.
The realistic route
Read whether the spec named MHFA England
If it did, apply to MHFA England. They state they are the only organisation in England able to provide that licensed instructor training. A Guild cohort cannot be relabelled to match. If the spec asked for a defendable first-contact protocol, that is a different purchase.
Practise the conversation, not the brand
Listen, signpost, stop. Record it. Let someone fail you for treating a colleague. Coping posters without a named EAP or occupational-health route are incomplete.
Map the protocol to job design
HSE management standards still apply. First contact that ignores workload is a sticking plaster. The sister wellbeing programme assesses intervention design. Many people need both. Neither is therapy.
Refuse the unofficial-therapist role
Depression, suicidality and crisis belong with occupational health, the EAP, a GP or emergency services. A longer helping conversation is not treatment. Organisations that blur that line create an insurance event.
Say what you passed
First-contact protocol, or MHFA instructor membership, not both unless both are true. Trademarked names on a bio you did not earn are how procurement gets a course they did not buy.
What does a workplace first-contact lead actually do?
They hold a first conversation with a distressed colleague, signpost to named routes, and keep a protocol the organisation can defend. They do not treat mental illness. They do not become the unofficial therapist. The useful ones can name occupational health and the EAP without sounding as if they have been diminished.
Typical work sits in HR, facilities or a wellbeing brief. Typical harm is passing off MHFA or offering counselling. See mental health first contact.

Do you need MHFA instructor status to help at work?
Not legally. If the organisation named MHFA England, that is the product to buy. If they needed a first-contact protocol mapped to HSE duties, assessed protocol design is the honest fit. Instructor licensing is a licensed curriculum. First contact is a workplace skill. They are not synonyms.
How much does a workplace first-contact role pay?
It is usually part of an HR or wellbeing salary, not a separate profession with a published band we would stand behind. We will not invent one. If a diploma quotes a typical salary, ask which job the respondents actually held.
MHFA instructor work, where licensed, is a different commercial story owned by that body. Do not use their rates to sell a generic diploma.

Can I call myself an MHFA instructor after a Guild course?
No. Only MHFA England licenses that role in England. Passing off is the failure mode.
Is first contact a counselling qualification?
No. It signposts. Counselling is a different career with placement hours.
