Working in SEND support in UK schools
How SEND support roles in UK schools actually work, why they are not the SENCO job, and what training can honestly cover for staff already in post.
There is no single protected title of SEND practitioner. The designated SENCO in a maintained mainstream school must be a qualified teacher, and new SENCOs must complete the NPQ for SENCOs within three years of appointment. Teaching-assistant and pastoral posts are employment decisions by schools. Awareness diplomas do not create those jobs or a right to diagnose.
The realistic route
Get into a school, or do not buy a school identity
Teaching-assistant and pastoral posts are recruited by schools, often with level 2 or 3 supporting qualifications they name. A marketplace SEND practitioner certificate is not a substitute for that employment. If you are not in a school, this is the wrong career page.
Learn the Code of Practice as a tool
Assess, plan, do, review. EHCP literacy. Working under a designated SENCO. That is the job. Diagnostic theatre is not. Assessed case work that can fail for overreach is the honest training product.
Do not impersonate the SENCO
Parents will ask you to be the coordinator. You are not, unless you hold the designated role. The useful staff member takes work to the SENCO. The dangerous one freelances provision and writes as if they owned the plan.
If the destination is the SENCO role, start from QTS
Then the NPQ, then the three-year window. A ten-week cohort cannot be that qualification. GOV.UK lists the mandatory award. We will point you there rather than print the letters.
Keep diagnosis in the clinic
Autism, ADHD and specific learning difficulties are identified through processes schools do not own alone. Awareness helps you adjust the room. It does not let you name a condition on a website.
What does SEND support in a school actually involve?
Working inside provision the school has already decided, under a designated SENCO, with the Code of Practice as the frame. It is not a private practitioner identity. It is not diagnosis. Teaching assistants and pastoral staff who last are the ones who can explain what they may not do as clearly as what they may.
Typical work includes in-class support, small-group interventions the school has chosen, and contributing to reviews without rewriting an EHCP. See SEND practice for school staff.

Do you need qualifications to work in SEND support?
Schools decide. Many TA posts name supporting qualifications. The designated SENCO role names QTS and, for new SENCOs, the NPQ. A short awareness diploma satisfies neither. Assessed practice for staff already in post can make you more useful. It cannot print the statutory award.

How much does SEND support work pay in the UK?
School support-staff pay is an employment matter set by the school or local authority. We will not invent a band, and we will not recycle teacher or SENCO leadership pay as a promise for an awareness diploma. If a course quotes a salary, ask which job the respondents held.
The designated SENCO is a leadership role with a mandatory qualification. Support staff are a different grade. Mixing the two in marketing is the product.
School jobs are employment. Marketplace identities are not. Get into a school, or do not buy a school title. The designated SENCO is QTS plus the NPQ. Support staff still need Code of Practice literacy under that SENCO, with a hard stop at diagnosis. Parents will ask you to be the coordinator. The useful answer is to take the work to the person who actually holds the role. An autism diploma that prints SENCO in the title is search demand, not the job.
