How to become a nutrition coach in the UK
What a nutrition coach may legally do, why dietitian is protected, and a realistic non-clinical route that does not impersonate a register.
Nutrition coach is not a protected title. Dietitian is, and using it without HCPC registration is a criminal offence. Registered Nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition is the meaningful voluntary equivalent and requires an accredited degree pathway. A short course is not a stepping stone onto either register, however it is branded.
The realistic route
Decide you are not a dietitian
If you needed NHS dietetic work or clinical disease management, start from HCPC-approved degrees. If you needed Registered Nutritionist status, start from AfN-accredited courses. Coaching-scope work is healthy-eating support for people without that clinical need. Mixing the titles is the most common harm in this market.
Get assessed on case work that can fail
Ask who marks screening and referral, and whether treating diabetes as a coaching task is a fail. Self-paced nutrition diplomas skip that because implying a register sells. Marking overreach costs money and loses the diploma-shaped search demand. That is the point.
Write a scope an insurer would recognise
No medication advice, no eating-disorder treatment, no disease protocols. Professional indemnity questions will match your website. If the site says nutritionist and the contract says coach, pick one before a complaint does it for you.
Build a dietitian relationship before you need one
Referral is a skill: what you send, what you do not undo, when you stop. Practitioners who last are the ones who can lose a client to a dietitian. Practitioners who fail are the ones who compete with clinicians on Instagram.
Name the offer without a halo
'Nutrition coach' plus a written limit finds the right clients. 'Become a nutritionist in ten weeks' finds the wrong ones and trains you to over-claim. Price packages, not medical miracles. The first year is a coaching business that happens to talk about food.
What does a nutrition coach actually do?
A nutrition coach supports eating-pattern change in people without a clinical nutrition need: regularity, food environment, and habits they have chosen. They do not treat disease, advise on medication, or use the title dietitian. The useful ones refer early and can say so in the contract without sounding as if they have been diminished.
Typical work includes intake screening, twelve-week habit plans, and supplement-claim appraisal. When unexplained weight loss, disordered eating or diagnosed disease appears, the coach stops. That stop is the service, not a footnote.
Do you need qualifications to become a nutrition coach?
Not legally for the unprotected title. You cannot become a dietitian or a Registered Nutritionist this way. Commercially, informed clients and any client with a condition need a register. Assessed coaching-scope training is for the rest, and it should say so on the certificate rather than in a disclaimer nobody reads.

How much does a nutrition coach earn in the UK?
We will not invent a band. Dietetic NHS bands are a different profession and a bad proxy. Coaching income follows client acquisition and a scope you can defend. If a diploma quotes a typical salary, ask which register the respondents sat on.
Packages and workplace healthy-eating workshops, clearly non-clinical, are the usual commercial shape. Clinical nutrition fees belong to people on a register. Do not use NHS dietetic bands as a proxy: that is a different qualification, a different duty of care, and a different buyer.
