Do you need a licence to practise massage in the UK?
Short answer
Often yes, if you run a premises offering massage or other special treatments. GOV.UK tells you to contact your council. Requirements, fees and exemptions vary by postcode, including for some home studios. A course certificate is not the licence. Trading without the licence your council requires can be an offence.
Is massage licensed in the UK?
There is no single national licence and no protected title. In much of England, establishments offering massage or other special treatments need a premises licence from the local council. GOV.UK's licence finder sends you there. Greater London commonly uses local Acts. Ask the council for the address you will work from, not a forum.
Special treatments on the GOV.UK page include massage, manicure, chiropody, light treatments, electric treatments and heat or vapour treatments. Skin piercing is often a separate licence outside Greater London.
If you employ therapists, they may also need to register. Premises may be inspected before a licence is granted. Fines apply if you trade without a licence or break its conditions.

Can a massage course replace the council licence?
No. Only the council can grant a special-treatments licence. A course can teach consent, contraindications, observed practice and how to apply. It cannot inspect your room or stamp the paper. Providers who imply a national licence on a diploma are selling a stamp they do not hold.

Do you need a licence to massage from home?
Ask your council. Some treat a home studio as a premises. Assuming an exemption is how people get fined. Planning, neighbours and insurance sit beside the licence question. A course that never mentions home working is incomplete for the way many graduates actually trade.
Advertising without a licence, where one is required, can itself be an offence in some boroughs. Check before you put a booking link live. Fees vary; we will not invent yours.
Who should skip an online massage diploma?
Anyone who needed a council licence this month and thought the PDF was it. Anyone unwilling to be observed. Anyone planning to diagnose. Anyone whose council will inspect a room the course never mentioned. Technique remains worth learning. Implied licensing is the purchase to avoid.

How should you choose massage training this week?
Open your council's special-treatments page first. If they require a licence, that process is non-negotiable. Then buy observed practice that assesses a plan for that council. Do not buy a sequence that never mentions licensing. Do not buy a diploma that pretends to be the stamp.

Reversing that sequence is how people fit a couch, print business cards, and discover they cannot legally trade. Ask the council. Keep the answer in writing.
