# Workplace mental-health first contact

What workplace mental-health first-contact training can cover, why it is not MHFA England instructor licensing, and when to buy that product instead.

## What should workplace first-contact training cover?

A conversation that signposts rather than treats, named routes to occupational health, EAP and crisis services, and a protocol mapped to job-design duties. Coping tips without workload are incomplete. If the provider implies you may teach Mental Health First Aid after a generic diploma, that is passing off, not training.

## Is first-contact training the same as MHFA instructor licensing?

No. MHFA is a specific licensed curriculum. Instructor training is sold by MHFA England. First-contact protocol design is a different product. Completing ours does not authorise you to teach theirs. A bio that mixes the two is how organisations buy a trademarked course they did not actually get.

## Who should skip workplace first-contact training?

Anyone whose spec named MHFA England instructor membership. Anyone planning to treat colleagues. Anyone who only needed a lunchtime briefing. Anyone who wanted to become a counsellor on the company's time. First contact is the right buy for signposting. It is the wrong buy for a licensed brand or a clinical career.

If the spec named MHFA England, stop. First-contact protocol design is a different purchase, and job-design wellbeing is a third. A diploma that implies all three is passing off a licensed curriculum as a generic HR badge.

## Common questions

**Why does The Study Guild not teach MHFA?**

Because we are not licensed to. MHFA England is. We teach first-contact protocol design and say so.

**Is first contact a counselling qualification?**

No. It signposts. Counselling is a different career with placement hours.
