# Workplace wellbeing training in the UK

What workplace wellbeing training should cover in the UK, how it differs from therapy, and why a happiness diploma is usually the wrong buy for an HR role.

## Is workplace wellbeing a regulated profession in the UK?

No. There is no protected title of wellbeing officer or corporate wellness coach. Employers still have legal duties for work-related stress under health and safety law. Training that ignores those duties and teaches only individual coping is incomplete, however kind it sounds. The role is real. The certificate market around it is mostly unregulated.

The HSE management standards cover demands, control, support, relationships, role and change.
That is a job-design framework, not a meditation script. CIPD and others publish HR guidance
on the same territory. A course that never names either is probably a lifestyle diploma.

Mental Health First Aid is a useful first-contact skill. It is not a counselling qualification
and it is not a substitute for occupational health.

## What should a workplace wellbeing lead actually train in?

How to spot organisational causes of stress, when to involve occupational health or a GP, how to keep conversations in scope, and how not to become the unofficial therapist. Coaching skill helps. Clinical training is a different career. The useful course names that boundary in the first hour, then assesses whether you can hold it with a distressed colleague.

| Goal | Buy this | Skip this |
|---|---|---|
| HR wellbeing lead | [Workplace Wellbeing Practitioner](/programmes/workplace-wellbeing-practitioner), plus MHFA as a licensed extra if needed | Happiness or “corporate wellness diploma” with no legal frame |
| One-to-one coaching at work | [Coaching for a workplace caseload](/subjects/coaching-psychology/life-coaching) with referral | Therapy techniques without a clinical pathway |
| Clinical support | EAP, occupational health, NHS | Internal coach treating depression |

Our menopause and sleep programmes show up in workplace conversations because those are where
managers get stuck. They are still coaching programmes, not an HR qualification.

## Who should skip a corporate wellness diploma?

Anyone whose job is to discharge employer stress duties and the syllabus never mentions the HSE. Anyone who wanted to become a counsellor on the company’s time. Anyone buying a badge to put on a slide deck. Short briefings can still help a leadership team; they are the wrong buy if you needed a practitioner credential.

Skip also if the provider implies you can run group therapy in the canteen. That is an
insurance event waiting for a date.

## What workplace training does The Study Guild actually sell?

An assessed intervention-design programme taught by someone who has owned the organisational brief, mapped to the HSE management standards. It is not Mental Health First Aid instructor licensing, not occupational-health training, and not a happiness diploma. If the spec names MHFA England, buy that product from the body that owns it.

## Common questions

**Is Mental Health First Aid the same as being a therapist?**

No. It is a first-contact and signposting skill. It does not qualify you to treat mental illness. We do not license MHFA instructors.

**Can an internal coach treat a colleague’s depression?**

No. That is a clinical presentation. The useful move is occupational health, the EAP or a GP, not a longer coaching contract.

**Is your programme a happiness diploma?**

No. The assessment is an intervention design that can fail if it ignores job design and referral.
