# Sleep coaching training in the UK

What sleep coaching training should include, why it is not a medical qualification, and how to judge a UK course against CBT-I and GP referral.

## What should sleep coaching training cover?

Sleep science in plain language, stimulus control and sleep restriction as used in behavioural insomnia work, and a written list of red flags. Those flags include loud snoring with pauses, sudden excessive sleepiness, and insomnia that arrived with other unexplained symptoms. Training that treats every poor night as a habit problem will miss the cases that are not.

NICE recommends CBT for insomnia as a treatment option in adults. That is not the same as a
short coaching diploma making you a CBT-I therapist. Hold the distinction when you read a
syllabus.

Our [Sleep Coaching Practitioner](/programmes/sleep-coaching-practitioner) programme is the
live assessed route we offer. See
[do sleep coaches need a medical qualification](/answers/do-you-need-a-medical-qualification-to-be-a-sleep-coach).

## Is sleep coaching the same as CBT-I?

No. CBT-I is a specific, evidence-based treatment for insomnia, usually delivered by trained clinicians or by people on a defined CBT-I pathway. Sleep coaching may borrow behavioural tools and still be a non-clinical role. Using the CBT-I name without that training is the kind of overclaim that gets coaches into insurance trouble.

If your goal is to deliver CBT-I in a clinical service, look at clinical training routes, not
a coaching certificate. If your goal is to help clients with routines, light, caffeine and
worry, coaching with a referral framework is the honest product.

The [sleep coach career guide](/careers/sleep-coach) describes what private clients typically
pay for, without inventing a salary survey we do not have.

## Who should skip a short sleep coaching diploma?

Anyone who wanted to diagnose sleep disorders or manage CPAP. Anyone whose clients will be people with suspected apnoea and no GP involvement. Anyone unwilling to be assessed on when they would refer. A cheap overview can still be a rational first look; it is the wrong buy if you plan to advertise as a sleep practitioner next month.

Skip also if the provider will not name who marks your case work. Attendance certificates are
how this market fills; marked referral judgement is how you stay safe.

## Common questions

**Can a sleep coach treat sleep apnoea?**

No. Suspected sleep apnoea needs medical assessment. A coach who continues behavioural work instead of referring is outside scope.

**Does The Study Guild run a sleep programme?**

Yes. Sleep Coaching Practitioner is a live assessed cohort with an explicit referral framework. It does not make you a sleep physician or a CBT-I therapist.
