# Massage training and local licences

How UK massage training relates to local special-treatments licences, why a course cannot stamp a council licence, and what observed practice is for.

## What should massage training include?

Consent, contraindications, observed treatment, hygiene, and a plan for the council where you will work. Anatomy without a medical qualification. If the provider never watches you, and never mentions special-treatments licensing, you are buying a sequence, not a way to trade legally from an address.

## Can a massage course license you to practise?

No. GOV.UK tells you to contact your council for a premises licence if you run an establishment for massage or other special treatments. Only that council can grant it. A course can teach you how to apply and what to ask. It cannot inspect your room. Trading without the licence your council requires can be an offence.

## Who should skip an online massage diploma?

Anyone who needed a council licence this month and thought the PDF was it. Anyone unwilling to be observed. Anyone planning to diagnose. Anyone whose council will inspect a room the course never mentioned. Technique remains worth learning. Implied licensing is the purchase to avoid.


Skip also if you work from home and assumed an exemption. Some councils treat a home studio

Rules vary by postcode, including inside Greater London. Do not generalise from another borough's exemption list. Open the council page for the address you will work from, then buy observed practice that assesses a plan for that council, then apply. The diploma is not the stamp.
