# Nutrition coaching training in the UK

How to judge UK nutrition-coaching training, why it is not dietetics, and when a short diploma is implying a register it cannot deliver.

## What should nutrition coaching training include?

Screening, healthy-eating coaching, supplement-claim appraisal, and referral to a dietitian or GP. Meal plans that treat disease are a fail, not a feature. If the provider cannot say who marks case work, and the title on the certificate is 'nutritionist' without a register, treat it as marketing.

Our [Nutrition Coaching Foundations](/programmes/nutrition-coaching-foundations) programme
assesses case studies against that line. For the legal map of titles, see the parent
[nutrition hub](/subjects/nutrition) and
[dietitian versus nutritionist](/subjects/nutrition/dietitian-vs-nutritionist).

## Is nutrition coaching a route to becoming a dietitian?

No. Dietetics is an HCPC-approved degree. AfN registration is a separate accredited-degree pathway. Coaching-scope training sits beside those careers. It does not feed into them as a credit. Providers who imply a stepping stone are selling hope the registers will not honour.

That honesty is the whole point of offering the coaching product at all. Hiding it would
recreate the diploma market we are positioned against.

## Who should skip nutrition coaching training?

Anyone who needed a dietetic or Registered Nutritionist career. Anyone planning to advise on medication, eating disorders or clinical conditions. Anyone who believed the certificate would let them work in the NHS as a dietitian. That belief is the harm.

Skip if your insurer or employer names HCPC or AfN and the course provides neither. Skip
also if you wanted a detox protocol or a supplement shop with a certificate attached. That
is a different, worse product. Nutrition coaching as we teach it is screening, habit change
and referral. It is slower to market than a diploma that says nutritionist. It is also the
version that does not walk you into a complaint the first time a client mentions insulin.

## Common questions

**Can I call myself a nutritionist after coaching training?**

The title is unprotected, so legally yes. Informed clients and any client with disease need a register. Say coach, and name the limit.

**Why offer this if you will not offer a nutrition diploma?**

Because coaches already talk about food, and marked referral is safer than an implied diploma.
