# Dietitian vs nutritionist in the UK

The legal difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist in the UK, which titles are protected, and why short diplomas cannot reach either register.

## Which nutrition titles are protected in the UK?

Dietitian is protected. Using it without Health and Care Professions Council registration is a criminal offence. Nutritionist is not protected. Registered Nutritionist, with the Association for Nutrition, is a voluntary but checkable title that requires accredited degree-level study. Everything else is a description, not a register.

## Can a short online course make you a dietitian or Registered Nutritionist?

No. Both routes are degree-level. A CPD nutrition certificate can teach useful food knowledge for a coach who already knows their scope. It cannot put you on either register, and it cannot make NHS dietetic work available. Providers who imply otherwise are selling the title, not the training.

## Who should skip a short nutrition diploma?

Anyone who needed HCPC or AfN registration. Anyone planning to advise on medication, eating disorders or diagnosed disease. Anyone whose employer named dietitian in the person spec. A short course can still teach food knowledge for coaches. Implied clinical status is the harm, and that is the purchase to avoid.


Skip also if the brochure uses dietitian and nutritionist interchangeably. That is not a
style choice. It is a legal category error.


## Common questions

**Why does The Study Guild not sell a dietetic qualification?**

Because a credible one is an HCPC-approved degree. We teach coaching-scope nutrition and a preparation map, and we are explicit that neither makes anyone a dietitian.

**Is nutritional therapist the same as dietitian?**

No. Dietitian is a protected HCPC title. Nutritional therapist is a different, unregulated field with its own voluntary registers.
