# Mindfulness teacher training in the UK

How UK mindfulness teacher training actually works, what BAMBA registration requires, and why an eight-week personal course is not a teaching qualification.

## Is mindfulness teaching regulated in the UK?

No. Anyone may teach mindfulness or use the title. The British Association of Mindfulness-based Approaches is the UK professional body for secular, evidence-based teaching. Its register is voluntary. Employers, the NHS and informed commissioners still use it as the practical check, which is why a certificate that never mentions BAMBA is usually selling a different product.

BAMBA publishes Good Practice Guidelines covering training, supervision, personal practice and
ethics. Teacher training organisations can be quality-assessed by BAMBA. That is not statutory
regulation and it is still the standard worth asking about before you pay.

Our [Mindfulness Facilitation](/programmes/mindfulness-facilitation) programme assesses
observed teaching and a practice log. It states on the certificate that it is not BAMBA
registration. A short module inside coaching is not teacher training either.

## What does BAMBA-aligned teacher training actually require?

You first complete an eight-week MBSR or MBCT course as a participant and keep a personal practice. Teacher training then takes further taught time, supervised teaching, and usually leading or co-leading another eight-week course before you apply to the register. That is a year-scale pathway for most people, not a bank-holiday certificate.

NHS-linked centres that train teachers, such as the Sussex Mindfulness Centre, publish this
sequence in public. If a commercial provider compresses it into a weekend and still says
“qualified teacher”, ask which register you will be eligible for on Monday morning.

| Goal | Buy this | Skip this |
|---|---|---|
| BAMBA-registered teacher | Affiliated teacher-training organisation plus supervision | Weekend mindfulness teacher certificate |
| Personal practice | An eight-week MBSR or MBCT with a registered teacher | Teacher training you are not ready for |
| Workplace wellbeing sessions | [Workplace Wellbeing Practitioner](/programmes/workplace-wellbeing-practitioner) or observed facilitation | Implied clinical mindfulness teacher status |

## Who should skip a weekend mindfulness teacher certificate?

Anyone who needed BAMBA registration or an NHS teaching role. Anyone without an established personal practice. Anyone planning to work with clinical depression using MBCT without the clinical pathway that evidence was built on. A short course can still teach you to sit. It is the wrong product if you plan to charge for teaching next month.

Skip also if you wanted a coaching career and thought mindfulness hours would substitute for
observed coaching. They will not. See [life coaching training](/subjects/coaching-psychology/life-coaching).

If your actual job is workplace wellbeing rather than eight-week clinical groups, read
[workplace wellbeing](/subjects/workplace-wellbeing) instead of buying a teacher title you
will not use.

## What does The Study Guild sell instead of BAMBA teacher training?

Observed facilitation for short practices, and a longer teacher-training cohort of an eight-week form, both with logs that can fail. They are better products than an unwatched weekend diploma. Neither is BAMBA-registered teacher status. If you need that register for NHS or commissioned work, start from BAMBA's own lists, not from us.

Search demand is not a reason to steal a professional body's name. The same rule applies to
counselling placements and CNHC education-provider status. We would rather lose that search
than fake the hours.

## Common questions

**Is an eight-week MBCT course enough to teach?**

It is the usual prerequisite for BAMBA-aligned teacher training, not the teaching qualification itself. Pathways then add teacher training, supervision and further taught groups.

**Does CPD accreditation make you a mindfulness teacher?**

No. CPD records attendance. BAMBA registration is the check informed commissioners use, and it is a different process.

**Does your facilitation programme put me on the BAMBA register?**

No. It assesses observed teaching. BAMBA registration is a separate, voluntary professional pathway.
