# Personal training courses in the UK

How to judge UK personal-training courses, what CIMSPA status actually means, and why an observed Guild cohort is not a CIMSPA-endorsed Level 3.

## What should personal-training courses include?

Practical observation of coaching, programme design for apparently healthy adults, screening, and referral when exercise is the wrong tool. Nutrition beyond healthy-eating signposting is dietetic work. If the provider never watches you, and the certificate implies CIMSPA or Level 3 without awarding either, treat it as marketing.

## Is a Guild personal-training pass the same as CIMSPA status?

No. CIMSPA professional status is built around evidencing that body's occupational standard, often via endorsed qualifications. Observed coaching is a different product. Legal freedom to train clients is not the same as employability in a gym that named CIMSPA. The certificate should say which of those you bought.

## Who should skip an unendorsed personal-training course?

Anyone whose first employer named CIMSPA-endorsed or Ofqual Level 3 training. Anyone planning to treat disease. Anyone unwilling to be observed. A theory course can still be orientation. It is the wrong buy if you needed the occupational qualification the gym will check on Monday.

Practical observation is the part that costs money to deliver, which is why it disappears first from bargain diplomas. Ask who watches you coach a real lift, whether a fail is possible, and what the certificate will refuse to print. If the provider cannot answer, you are buying a library.

## Common questions

**Do I legally need CIMSPA to train clients?**

No. The title is unprotected. Gyms and many insurers still treat CIMSPA status or equivalent as the practical minimum.

**Does The Study Guild award Level 3 PT?**

No. We assess observed coaching and say so. If you need an Ofqual-regulated award, buy one from an awarding organisation that issues it.
