# Relationship coaching training in the UK

How to judge UK relationship-coaching training, how it differs from couples therapy, and why two-client recordings matter.

## What should relationship coaching training include?

Two-client contracting, observed sessions, domestic-abuse signposting, and a stop when the work is clinical. Communication models on slides are the easy part. Neutrality when one partner wants out is the hard part, and it does not survive a multiple-choice test.

## How does relationship coaching differ from couples therapy?

Coaching works with two functioning adults on forward-looking agreements. Therapy treats distress, trauma and patterns that need a clinical frame. The titles are both largely unprotected in everyday use, which is why the training pathway and the contract have to do the distinguishing work the law will not do.


If you need to work as a couples therapist, start from BACP or UKCP accredited lists. A
coaching certificate is not a shorter version of that pathway.


## Who should skip relationship coaching training?

Anyone who wanted a counselling qualification. Anyone who intended to work with active domestic abuse as a primary practitioner. Anyone unwilling to be recorded with two clients. Anyone whose offer is rescuing a relationship at any cost, which is not a coaching contract.


Skip also if you only needed better conversations in a management role —
[counselling skills](/programmes/counselling-skills) is the better fit. Skip a relationship
diploma if you will not put two clients in a recording. Communication models are cheap.
Neutrality when one partner wants out is the job, and it does not survive a multiple-choice
test.       Therapy training remains the right buy if trauma or coercion is the work you actually
wanted. Do not relabel it as coaching to make the course shorter.       Two-client recordings
that can fail are the professional product in this niche.


## Common questions

**Is relationship coaching regulated?**

No. The title is unprotected. Couples therapy training still runs through counselling and psychotherapy bodies.

**Can I coach one partner only?**

Yes, on their goals, if the contract does not pretend the other partner consented to joint work.
