# Life coaching training in the UK

How to judge UK life coaching training, what ICF and EMCC actually mean, and when a 12-week assessed cohort is the wrong product.

## What should life coaching training include?

Observed practice, a published competency framework, ethics and contracting, and a clear line between coaching and therapy. Hours on slides do not substitute for hours being recorded and marked. If the provider cannot say who assesses you and against what, treat the certificate as a receipt for attendance.


ICF and EMCC credentials are awarded by those bodies, not by training schools. A school can
align its syllabus and still not be ICF-accredited. We say so on

Our [Life Coaching Accreditation](/programmes/life-coaching-accreditation) programme is a
12-week assessed cohort. It is not an ICF diploma and we do not display an ICF mark.

## Should you choose an ICF diploma or a short assessed cohort?

Choose a longer ICF-accredited diploma if you need the shortest documented path onto that register, including mentor coaching and a performance evaluation. Choose a shorter assessed cohort if you need marked practice now, at a lower fee, and you are willing to complete ICF hours separately. They are different products. Pretending otherwise is how this market confuses buyers.

## Who should skip a life coaching course?

Anyone who wanted to practise psychotherapy. Anyone unwilling to be recorded. Anyone who needed a statutory qualification for a job specification that names counselling or clinical psychology. Anyone buying a certificate to feel ready without ever coaching a real person. Personal development is a legitimate use of a cheap course; it is not practitioner training.


Skip also if the marketing promises an ICF credential as if the school awarded it. The ICF
awards its own credentials after its own application.


## Common questions

**Is life coaching regulated in the UK?**

No. Anyone may use the title. ICF and EMCC credentials are voluntary and still the checks informed buyers use.

**Does a Study Guild pass equal an ICF ACC?**

No. We assess recorded sessions against a published framework. The ICF credential is a separate application to the ICF.
