# Counselling skills courses in the UK

What a UK counselling-skills course is for, why it is not counsellor training, and how to tell the two products apart before you pay.

## What is a counselling-skills course actually for?

Managers, teachers, coaches and support workers whose existing roles already involve difficult conversations. The skills are real. The harm is selling them as a route to seeing clients as a counsellor. Reputable providers say the difference in the title, not in a footnote.

## Can a skills course lead to BACP registration?

No. BACP registration requires an accredited qualification, supervised placement hours and personal therapy requirements a short skills course does not provide. Treating skills hours as a down-payment on registration is how people lose years, and then discover the hours never counted.


Skills training can make you a better later candidate for a diploma. It does not count as
the diploma.


## Who should skip a counselling-skills course?

Anyone who thought it was counsellor training. Anyone whose employer spec names BACP or UKCP registration. Anyone unwilling to do years of placement-based training if that is the real goal. The skills course is the right buy for the job you already have.

have already decided the destination is private practice as a counsellor: you will spend the
fee and still need the diploma.       The honest sequence is skills for the job you have, then a
BACP or UKCP accredited pathway if and only if you want the career. Reversing that sequence
is how people collect certificates that no placement provider will honour. Skills training
remains a real product. Counsellor training remains a different, longer one.


## Common questions

**Is counsellor a protected title?**

No, which is exactly why using it after a skills course is the problem. Employers still ask about BACP or UKCP.

**Why does The Study Guild sell skills if counsellor training exists?**

Because they are different jobs. Skills is for the role you already have. The diploma requires a placement log you source and is still not BACP-accredited.
