# CBT skills training for non-therapists

What a short CBT skills course can and cannot do, why it does not make you a therapist, and how to choose UK training that stays in scope.

## What should CBT skills training for non-therapists cover?

The cognitive model in plain language, how to notice unhelpful thinking without interrogating someone, behavioural experiments you are actually allowed to run, and referral. It should assess whether you can stop when the presentation is clinical. Technique without that stop is how coaches end up doing therapy by accident.


BABCP-accredited therapist training is a different product: years, supervision, and a clinical

## How is CBT skills training different from becoming a CBT therapist?

Therapist training is clinical. It requires a recognised pathway, supervised clinical hours, and usually a core profession. Skills training is for coaching, education, nursing support or HR. Mixing the two on a certificate is the error. If a provider will not say which one they are selling, they are selling the more impressive label.


If your job specification names BABCP accreditation, a skills diploma will not satisfy it.
If you want better conversations at work, therapist training is the expensive way round.
Read the person spec first, then buy the matching product — not the more impressive letters.


## Who should skip a short CBT certificate?

Anyone who thought it was a therapy qualification. Anyone planning to treat depression, PTSD or eating disorders as a primary practitioner. Anyone whose insurer or employer names a clinical register. Anyone unwilling to have a session observed. Orientation courses are fine; implied therapist status is not.

**Will this let me call myself a CBT therapist?**

No. Therapist titles in this field sit on clinical training pathways such as BABCP-accredited routes, not on a short skills programme.

**Does The Study Guild teach CBT?**

We teach CBT practitioner skills for non-clinical roles, assessed by a chartered psychologist. We do not train CBT therapists.
