# Career coaching training in the UK

How to judge UK career-coaching training, why the title is unprotected, and when a self-paced diploma is the wrong buy for practice.

## What should career coaching training include?

Observed practice, a written contract that does not guarantee a job, labour-market honesty, and a referral line when the work is clinical. Hours on slides do not substitute for hours being recorded and marked. If the provider cannot say who assesses you, treat the certificate as a receipt for attendance.


Recruitment, statutory careers guidance and therapy are adjacent jobs with different rules.
Training that blurs them is how coaches end up making promises they cannot keep.

## Should you choose a self-paced career diploma or an assessed cohort?

Choose a cheap self-paced diploma if you wanted to explore the subject and will not coach paying clients on the back of it. Choose an assessed live cohort if a buyer will ask who marked your sessions. They are different products. Relabelling a PDF as practitioner training is how this market wastes fees.


Centre of Excellence-style catalogues are a rational buy for exploration. They are a weak buy
for a practice, because nobody watched you invent a salary band.


## Who should skip career coaching training?

Anyone who wanted to become a recruiter or a statutory careers adviser — those are different pathways. Anyone unwilling to be recorded. Anyone whose offer depends on guaranteed job outcomes. Anyone who needed therapy training and thought career coaching was a warmer name for the same work.


Skip also if a job specification names a guidance qualification we do not award. Read the spec
and buy that product. A live assessed cohort is still the wrong buy if you only wanted to
rewrite your own CV. Books and a careful friend are cheaper for that. Career coaching as a
practice starts when someone else pays you not to invent a labour market, and that is the
part a PDF cannot mark.

**Is career coaching regulated in the UK?**

No. The title is unprotected. Informed buyers still ask who assessed your practice.

**Is this the same as life coaching?**

It shares coaching skills. The labour-market and employer-paid work is specific. If your clients are not in a job-search or career-decision, the life-coaching programme is the better fit.
