# Interior design training in the UK

How to judge UK interior-design training, why the title is unprotected, and when a mood-board diploma is the wrong buy for a practice.

## What should interior design training include?

Briefing, a concept that can be built, specification a trade can price, and a delivery sequence including snagging. Colour theory without a builder's order of works is decoration class. If the tutor has not run a job this year, treat the certificate as atmosphere.

## Should you choose a self-paced interior diploma or a live practice cohort?

Choose a cheap diploma if you wanted to explore style and will not take a client's money. Choose a live assessed cohort if a client will ask whether you have ever got a kitchen through a builder. Relabelling a mood board as a practice credential is how this market wastes fees.


Centre of Excellence-style catalogues are a rational exploration buy. They are a weak
professional buy, because nobody watched your specification fail.


## Who should skip interior design training?

Anyone who wanted to become an architect. Anyone who needed a hobby colour course — cheaper products exist for that. Anyone unwilling to produce drawings and a specification. Anyone whose plan was to practise on paying clients from Pinterest alone.


Skip also if a project is already a listed building or a structural change that needs an
architect. Training will not create that right. Skip a practitioner price if you only wanted
to restyle your own flat: friends, books and a cheaper exploration course are more honest.
Interior design as a practice starts when a client pays you to get a room through a builder
without a surprise in week six. Mood boards are not that, however good they look on a phone.

## Common questions

**Is interior design licensed in the UK?**

No. The title is unprotected. Architect is protected. Insurance and a portfolio are still the commercial requirements.

**Do I need CAD?**

You need drawings a trade can interpret. Photoreal renders without a specification do not substitute.
