# How to become a workplace wellbeing lead

What a workplace wellbeing lead actually does in the UK, how that differs from therapy, and why a happiness diploma is usually the wrong buy.

## Role facts

- Role: Workplace Wellbeing Lead
- Legally regulated in the UK: no
- Salary: no reliable published data for this role; we do not publish an estimate.

## Route into the role

1. **Start from job design, not from perks** — The HSE management standards cover demands, control, support, relationships, role and change. If your training never names those, it is a wellness catalogue. Read the HSE page before you buy a course. An employer can be doing yoga in the atrium and still failing a stress risk assessment.

2. **Get assessed on an intervention design** — A quiz on wellbeing theory will not survive a people director. Ask whether you must submit a design that maps referral routes and a measure, and whether it can fail. Self-paced corporate wellness diplomas skip that because marking a design costs money.

3. **Write the referral route before you need it** — Occupational health, EAP limits, GP and crisis. Managers who decide they are therapists are a risk. Your protocol should name what wellbeing will not touch. Professional indemnity is effectively required if you consult. Internal leads still need a written route an incident could be held against.

4. **Do not steal licensed products** — MHFA England licenses Mental Health First Aid instructor training. BAMBA is a voluntary professional body for mindfulness teaching. Relabelling those as a generic diploma is both dishonest and, in the MHFA case, a licensing problem. Buy the product from the body that owns it when you need that product.

5. **Evaluate or do not bother** — A talk without a measure is a perk. Decide what would change your mind about continuing the spend. Absence and turnover are blunt; they are still better than a smiley-face survey you wrote yourself. The practitioners who last can stop an intervention that is not working.

## What does a workplace wellbeing lead actually do?

They design and run an organisational offer: work-design risks, referral routes, and interventions an employer can defend. They are not a therapist, not an occupational-health clinician, and not an MHFA instructor unless separately licensed. The job is systems and signposting, not fixing people in a lunchtime talk.

Typical work includes mapping what already exists, briefing leadership without guarantees,
buying specialist sessions when a named risk appears, and killing well-meant activity that
duplicates the EAP. Yoga can be a tactic. It is not a programme.

## Do you need qualifications to become a workplace wellbeing lead?

Not legally. The title is unprotected. Employers still have HSE duties, and person specs often name CIPD, occupational health or a clinical register. Read the spec. A happiness diploma will not satisfy a clinical post, and it will not substitute for job-design work in an HR post.

CIPD membership helps in people-profession careers and is not a legal requirement to run a
wellbeing brief. Assessed intervention design is the commercial filter when you consult.

## How much does a workplace wellbeing lead earn in the UK?

In-house salaries follow HR and people-profession bands, which vary by employer and are not something we will invent from a course brochure. Consultancy income follows whether you can sell a defendable design. If a diploma quotes a figure, ask which survey and which role.

Do not use clinical occupational-health salaries as a proxy. That is a different
qualification. Price consultancy from a costed day rate, not from a wellness influencer's
Instagram.

## Common questions

**Is this the same as being a therapist at work?**

No. If the organisation needed a clinic, it should hire or contract clinicians. Wellbeing leads who blur that line create risk.

**Do I need to work in HR already?**

No, but you need an organisation to design for. Abstract theory is not the job.
