# How to become a relationship coach in the UK

What a relationship coach actually does, how that differs from couples therapy, and a realistic route to assessed two-client practice.

## Role facts

- Role: Relationship Coach
- Legally regulated in the UK: no
- Salary: no reliable published data for this role; we do not publish an estimate.

## Route into the role

1. **Decide you are not a couples therapist** — If you needed to work with trauma, coercion or clinical depression as the primary task, train as a therapist. Coaching is agreements and repair between two functioning adults, or individual work on relational goals. Mixing the titles on a website is how insurers and clients get a different service from the one they thought they bought.

2. **Get assessed with two clients in the recording** — Communication models are cheap. Neutrality is not. Ask whether the marker will watch a two-client session and whether a fail is possible. Self-paced relationship diplomas skip that because it is expensive to observe. It is also the whole job.

3. **Write a two-client contract and a no-secrets rule** — Who consents, what you write down, what you do if one partner emails you privately, and when you stop. Professional indemnity is effectively required. Domestic-abuse signposting belongs in the protocol, not in a bonus module you might skip.

4. **Learn the stop** — One person wants out. One person wants you to take a side. Someone describes fear at home. Those are the sessions that end careers and harm clients. Training that never rehearses them is a style course. Rehearse them before you take a fee.

5. **Name the offer so a therapist would recognise it** — Directory language that sounds like counselling will attract the wrong clients and the wrong complaints. Say coaching. Price a package that does not depend on saving the relationship. Refer generously. The practitioners who last are the ones who can lose a sale to a therapist.

## What does a relationship coach actually do?

A relationship coach contracts with two people, or with one person on relational goals, and works on agreements and repair conversations they have chosen. They do not take a side, treat trauma as a coaching task, or rescue a relationship at any cost. The useful ones can name the moment the work has become therapy and stop.

Typical work includes joint contracting, structured conflict, renegotiating household
agreements, and ending well. Individual coaching about a partner who has not consented to
joint work has a tighter scope. That distinction belongs in the first email, not week six.

## Do you need qualifications to become a relationship coach?

Not legally. The title is unprotected. Commercially, clients ask who watched you work with two people. A PDF diploma cannot answer that. Treat assessed two-client practice as the commercial requirement, and treat therapy qualifications as a different career if that is the destination.

Relate and counselling bodies run their own training. We do not award it. If a job spec names
those, buy those.

## How much does a relationship coach earn in the UK?

We will not invent a band. Credible niche-specific earnings data is not something we would stand behind today. Packages and a defined scope beat open-ended rescue. If a course quotes a typical income, ask for the survey and the year it was run.

Two-client work is slower to fill than individual coaching and usually prices higher per
engagement. Plan the pipeline accordingly. Do not use therapist fee surveys as a proxy —
that is a different qualification and a different duty of care.

## Common questions

**Can I work with couples in high conflict?**

Yes inside a coaching contract if both consented and you can stop for abuse or clinical need. Conflict is not automatically therapy. Coercion is not coaching.

**Do I need to be in a relationship?**

No. Your own history is material for supervision, not a credential.
