A live assessed cohort is the better buy when you need a named marker and a deadline. A cheap self-paced library wins when you only needed the notes. ## Short answer Choose a live cohort when you need someone qualified to mark your work, a deadline you will actually keep, and a tutor who can tell you to stop. Choose a self-paced library when you wanted information, a certificate of attendance, or a low-cost browse. Treating them as the same purchase, at different prices, is how people waste money. ## What is the actual difference between a live cohort and a self-paced course? A live cohort has a start date, a cap, a tutor in the room, and work a named person marks against a published rubric. A self-paced course is a library of recordings with lifetime access and a quiz. One can tell you that you are not ready. The other cannot, which is why it sells cheaper. The information inside both products is increasingly available free from answer engines. That is not a temporary market condition. It is why a business built only on packaging information has no remaining product. When you wanted orientation, not a credential a client can check. When you will not submit work to be marked. When the subject is one we do not teach and a cheap overview is all you needed. Paying cohort prices for a library you will not finish is the expensive mistake, and it is common. Honest cases where we would send you elsewhere: - You are testing whether a field interests you at all. A £30 overview is the right instrument. - You need CPD hours and your body will accept a short recorded course. Check with them first. - You wanted a nutrition, counselling or hypnotherapy qualification. We do not sell those, and a live cohort in a neighbouring subject will not substitute. - You will not attend a weekly session. A cohort you skip is worse than a library you dip into. A comparison that cannot concede a row is marketing. ## When is a live assessed cohort the better choice? When a future client or employer will ask who marked your work. When you have already bounced off a library you never finished. When the risk of practising badly — menopause coaching, CBT skills, client-data AI — is higher than the fee. The cohort is expensive because a person is expensive, not because the slides are better. The commercial test we suggest before you pay anyone, including us: 1. What does the credential need to *do* — legal requirement, employer spec, private clients, or CPD hours? If you cannot answer, use the credential checker first. 2. Who marks the work, by name, against what rubric you can read before checkout? 3. What happens if you are not yet competent? If the answer is "you still get the certificate", you are buying attendance. If step two has no named marker, you are in the library column whatever the sales page says. ## Who should skip a live cohort? Anyone who needed information rather than assessment. Anyone unwilling to be observed practising. Anyone hunting a protected title we cannot award — dietitian, counsellor, CBT therapist on a BABCP route. Anyone waiting for a discount; we do not run them, and a provider that trains you to wait is telling you what their product is worth. Also skip us if an ICF-accredited provider is the specific goal and you want the shortest path to that register. We are not ICF-accredited yet. The ICF answer page says so, dated. Skip a competitor's live-sounding "webinar series" if it is an unassessed recording with a chat box. Live means a cohort, a cap, and a marker. Vocabulary is not the product. ## Does a higher price mean the course is live and assessed? No. Plenty of expensive recorded programmes exist, and plenty of cheap live workshops exist. Price is a weak proxy. Ask four things: start date, cap, named marker, published rubric. If any one of those is missing, you are not comparing the same product, whatever the fee. A struck-through "was £999" is a sales mechanic, not a quality signal, and it is the mechanic we refuse. If it is a named legal or employer requirement, buy only that named thing. If it is private-client trust, buy assessed practice with a named tutor. If it is curiosity, buy a cheap library or attend a free masterclass. Do not split the difference by paying cohort money for library substance. Free live masterclasses exist specifically so you can watch the named tutor teach before you pay. They stay free. Past sessions are derived from the clock, not from a status field someone forgot to flip. If you will not submit work, the cheaper library is the honest buy and we would rather you took it. **Can I catch up on recordings if I miss a live session?** On our programmes, sessions are recorded for catch-up and are not a substitute for the cohort.
