Neither is legally required in the UK. Corporate buyers usually name ICF. EMCC is the European alternative with supervision. Pick the market first. ## Short answer Neither credential is legally required to coach in the UK. Corporate and executive buyers most often name ICF. EMCC's Individual Accreditation is the European alternative, with explicit supervision and reflective-practice requirements. Choose the body your buyers actually check. Collecting both without a market in mind is how coaches spend years on paperwork. ## Are ICF or EMCC credentials legally required in the UK? No. Coaching is unregulated, so neither body is a statutory regulator. Their credentials are voluntary professional designations. They carry weight with informed buyers precisely because the law does not require them. A provider implying their certificate is a licence to practise is describing a private status, not a legal one. The International Coaching Federation awards ACC, PCC and MCC credentials directly, never through a training provider. An application needs coach-specific training hours, logged client hours, mentor coaching and a performance evaluation. ICF-accredited training counts towards the hours. EMCC Global Individual Accreditation recognises practice quality, client hours, continuing development, reflective learning and ongoing one-to-one supervision. Levels run from Foundation through Practitioner, Senior Practitioner and Master Practitioner. Graduates of EMCC EQA-accredited training have a simpler application route. EMCC is not ICF, and the paperwork is not interchangeable. Foundation requires at least one year of practice, 50 client hours and five clients, plus evidence of CPD, reflection and supervision. Practitioner requires three years, 100 hours and ten clients. Those minima are set by EMCC and should be re-checked on their site before you plan around them. Anyone who has not yet picked a market. Anyone who needed a protected clinical title. Anyone treating credentials as a substitute for clients. If your spec names one body, buy that body's route. Each body still runs its own application, mentor-coaching or supervision rules, and register. Do not assume one diploma feeds both automatically — check each body's current rules. **Is EMCC 'the European ICF'?** No. It is a different organisation with a different competency framework, a different supervision requirement, and a different register. 'Equivalent' in a job spec is a procurement phrase, not a legal identity. **Should I do your programme or an ICF-accredited one?** If the ICF register is the goal, choose an ICF-accredited provider.
