Life coaching is unregulated in the UK, so no qualification is legally required. Corporate buyers and informed clients still ask who marked your work. ## Short answer No. Life coaching is not a regulated profession in the UK, so no qualification is legally required to use the title or charge. In practice, corporate buyers often ask for ICF or equivalent assessed training, and private clients ask who taught you. A weekend certificate satisfies neither. The legal gap is real; the commercial gap is what people trip over. ## Is life coaching regulated in the UK? No. There is no statutory register, protected title or licensing requirement for life coaches. Anyone may use the title and charge. The ICF, EMCC and Association for Coaching are voluntary professional bodies. Their credentials carry weight with informed buyers precisely because the law does not require them. GOV.UK's list of regulated professions does not include coaching. That surprises people who have been sold a "licence to practise". A private certificate is not a licence. Calling it one is the tell. Neighbouring titles that *are* regulated or functionally gated — counsellor, psychologist, psychotherapist — are different jobs with different training. A coaching diploma does not move you onto those registers. Corporate and executive buyers increasingly ask whether you hold an ICF credential or trained on an ICF-accredited programme. Private clients more often ask who taught you, whether anyone marked a recording of your work, and whether you carry insurance. Very few ask which CPD body accredited the PDF. That inverts how these courses are marketed. The logo is prominent. The assessor's name is often missing. If you are choosing training, ask for the assessment rubric and the marker's credential before you pay. A provider that cannot produce either is not assessing anything. We are not ICF-accredited yet and will not imply otherwise. ## Can a weekend course make you a life coach? It can give you a certificate and a vocabulary. It cannot give you assessed practice, a defensible scope of practice, or a way to know when you should refer. Weekend completion is possible only because the slow part — someone watching you coach and failing you if needed — has been left out. If you wanted orientation, a short course or a free masterclass is the right buy. If you wanted a practice, you need recorded sessions marked against a published competency framework, and you need the business training treated as assessed content rather than a bonus PDF. Our programme is 12 weeks, 30 live hours, two assessed recordings marked by an ICF Professional Certified Coach. It still does not grant an ICF credential. Only the ICF does that. ## Who should skip life-coach training? Anyone who wanted to practise psychotherapy or counselling — those need placement-based clinical training we do not offer. Anyone unwilling to be recorded. Anyone whose actual goal is the fastest ICF-accredited route; several UK providers already hold that accreditation and you should compare them, not us, until ours is granted. Also skip a long programme if you only needed CPD hours for a profession you already hold. Check your body's rules; a 12-week cohort is the wrong instrument for a handful of hours. ## How long does it take to become a working life coach? Assessed training is weeks to a few months. Building a client base is usually another year or more alongside other work. ICF's own credential, if you want it, adds logged hours and mentor coaching that cannot be compressed into the training block. Anyone advertising a career in a fortnight is selling the certificate, not the practice. The commercial gap is what people trip over. A client who asks 'who marked your work?' is not being difficult. They are doing the quality control the law declined to do. Use the credential checker if you still cannot name whether this is a legal, employer, client or CPD purchase. Those are four different products. ## Common questions **Do I legally need insurance to coach?** No, but professional indemnity is effectively required for corporate work, and no insurer will cover you retrospectively. Get a quote before you finish training. **Is an ICF credential legally required?** No. It is a voluntary professional credential. For corporate and executive coaching it is close to commercially essential. For many consumer niches, assessed competence matters more. **Should I do your programme or an ICF-accredited one?** If the ICF register is the specific goal, choose an ICF-accredited provider. If you want assessed recordings and business training, we are a reasonable choice.
