# Do you need a medical qualification to be a sleep coach?

Sleep coaching is unregulated in the UK, so no medical degree is required — but treating diagnosed sleep disorders is clinical work a coach must refer.

## Short answer

No. Sleep coaching is not a protected title in the UK, so no medical qualification is legally required to coach adults on sleep habits. Treating diagnosed sleep disorders, interpreting sleep studies or presenting as a clinician is a different, regulated activity. The useful training is the kind that teaches screening and referral, not a pretend medical badge.

## Is sleep coaching regulated in the UK?

No. There is no statutory register for sleep coaches. Clinical sleep physiology, medicine and CBT for insomnia delivered as therapy sit in different, regulated or accredited lanes. A coach can teach behavioural sleep habits to adults who have been medically cleared of the serious causes. They cannot diagnose apnoea, narcolepsy or insomnia as a clinician.

That boundary is the whole job. Clients arrive with snoring, gasping, depression, shift work
and 'I have tried everything'. Some of those presentations need a GP, a sleep clinic or a
mental-health referral before any coaching plan. Training that skips screening is how people
get hurt.

## What can a sleep coach legally do, and not do?

A sleep coach can take a structured intake, teach evidence-based behavioural methods, and hold a client accountable to a plan they have chosen. They cannot diagnose, prescribe, interpret overnight studies as a clinician, or tell a client to ignore medical advice. Crossing those lines is both a safety issue and an insurance issue.

CBT-I principles used inside a coaching scope are not the same as delivering CBT-I as a
therapist. If you want the clinical version, that is a different training route. Our programme
is explicit about the coaching version, including what a pass does not licence.

## Do employers want sleep coaches to have a medical degree?

Workplace wellbeing buyers typically ask whether you can screen for red flags, when you refer, and whether you hold professional indemnity insurance. They do not usually require a medical degree for a coaching or workshop brief. They will walk away from a practitioner who cannot describe a referral protocol in one paragraph.

NHS clinical sleep posts are a different market. Those person specs name clinical
qualifications we do not and cannot award. If that is the job you wanted, skip sleep-coach
training and look at the clinical routes.

## Who should skip sleep-coach training?

Anyone seeking to treat diagnosed sleep disorders. Parents wanting infant sleep training, which is a different discipline. Anyone who needed a salaried NHS sleep-physiology post. Anyone unwilling to screen and refer. A certificate that skips those boundaries is not a bargain. It is a liability.

Also skip a recorded weekend course if a buyer will ask who marked your case work. You will
not have an answer, and they can tell.

## How long does credible sleep-coach training take?

Credible UK programmes run around eight weeks with assessed client case work, not a weekend of videos. The time sits in the intake, the screening judgements and the six-week plan someone qualified reads. Courses that advertise overnight completion have left that part out, which is why they can be that short.

| Goal | Training that works | What to skip |
|---|---|---|
| Coach adults on sleep habits after screening | Assessed sleep-coach training with a named marker and a referral protocol | A weekend sleep certificate with a quiz |
| Treat diagnosed insomnia as a clinician | Accredited clinical or CBT-I therapist training | Sleep coaching sold as clinical practice |
| NHS sleep-physiology post | The clinical qualifications those specs name | Any coaching certificate |

Parents looking for infant sleep training are in a different discipline. A programme built for
adult behavioural sleep work will not make you an infant-sleep consultant, and marketing it
that way is how complaints start.

No reliable published survey of UK sleep-coaching income exists, so we do not publish a salary
band. Distrust any course page that tells you exactly what you will earn. The career pathway
says the same, dated, because a confident number here would be an invention rather than a
citation.

Infant sleep training is a different discipline. An adult behavioural programme will not make
you an infant-sleep consultant, and marketing it that way is how complaints start. Stay on the
coaching side of the line, or retrain clinically. Mixing the two in the offer is the failure
mode.

## Common questions

**Can I coach sleep without a science degree?**

Legally yes. Commercially, buyers still ask who taught you and whether your case work was marked. A science degree helps; it is not a substitute for assessed referral training.

**Is CBT-I the same as sleep coaching?**

No. CBT-I is a specific clinical protocol. Sleep coaching may draw on its principles inside a coaching scope. Delivering CBT-I as therapy requires the clinical training that goes with it.

**Do I need insurance?**

It is not legally mandatory, but professional indemnity is effectively required for paid work, and no insurer covers you retrospectively.
