Massage is not a protected title. Premises offering massage often need a local special-treatments licence. A course certificate is not that licence. ## Short answer Often yes, if you run a premises offering massage or other special treatments. GOV.UK tells you to contact your council. Requirements, fees and exemptions vary by postcode, including for some home studios. A course certificate is not the licence. Trading without the licence your council requires can be an offence. ## Is massage licensed in the UK? There is no single national licence and no protected title. In much of England, establishments offering massage or other special treatments need a premises licence from the local council. GOV.UK's licence finder sends you there. Greater London commonly uses local Acts. Ask the council for the address you will work from, not a forum. Special treatments on the GOV.UK page include massage, manicure, chiropody, light treatments, electric treatments and heat or vapour treatments. Skin piercing is often a separate licence outside Greater London. If you employ therapists, they may also need to register. Premises may be inspected before a licence is granted.
