# Can an online course make you a SENCO in England?

SENCOs in English mainstream schools must be qualified teachers and complete the NPQ for SENCOs. An online awareness diploma is not that award.

## Short answer

No. In maintained mainstream schools in England the SENCO must be a qualified teacher, or the headteacher, working at the school. New SENCOs must complete the National Professional Qualification for SENCOs within three years of appointment. An online autism or SEND diploma cannot be that qualification, and it cannot create a right to diagnose.


## What does the law require of SENCOs in England?

Every mainstream school must have a SENCO who is a qualified teacher, or the headteacher, working at the school. Since September 2024 the mandatory qualification for new SENCOs is the NPQ for SENCOs, replacing the former National Award for SEN Co-ordination. That is a school-employed leadership pathway, not a marketplace diploma.


SENCOs who already hold the NASENCO do not need to complete the NPQ. New SENCOs have a
three-year window from appointment. GOV.UK publishes the guidance. A course site that still
sells 'SENCO training' as a weekend PDF is flattening a statutory role into a search term.

## What is an online SEND or autism diploma actually for?

Personal understanding, better support in a role you already have, or Code of Practice literacy for staff who are not the designated SENCO. Used honestly it can be a good buy. Used as a substitute for QTS or the NPQ, it fails the first form that names those things. Diagnosis remains clinical.

## Do you need QTS to work in SEND?

For the designated SENCO role in maintained mainstream schools, yes — or you are the headteacher in post. Teaching-assistant and pastoral posts are employment decisions by schools and often do not require QTS. An awareness diploma awards neither QTS nor the NPQ. Read the person spec. Then buy only that.


Private tutors and 'SEND practitioners' outside school employment are largely unprotected
titles. They still cannot diagnose. They still cannot become the school's SENCO by buying a
PDF.


## Who should skip a course marketed as SENCO training?

Anyone whose spec named QTS or the NPQ for SENCOs. Anyone planning to diagnose. Anyone seeking a private practitioner identity with no school employer. Anyone who wanted to coach adults and thought a school course would cover it. Awareness remains useful for parents when it stays in that lane.


Skip also if the marketing uses practitioner to sound like a protected role. Ask the school
you want to work in what they actually shortlist on. See the

## How should you choose SEND training this week?

If the destination is the designated SENCO, start from GOV.UK and an NPQ provider. If you are already in a school and needed Code of Practice literacy under a SENCO, assessed support-staff practice is the honest Guild product. If you needed family coaching, that is a different career. Buy one job.


Use the credential checker if you still cannot name whether this is a legal, employer, client
or CPD purchase. For SENCOs, the legal product is the NPQ. We will tell you when we are the
wrong provider.


The SENCO role is a designated leadership job inside a school, not a marketplace identity. GOV.UK is explicit: the SENCO must be a qualified teacher, or the headteacher, working at the school, and new SENCOs must complete the NPQ within three years of appointment. People who already hold the former National Award do not need to repeat it. An autism-awareness diploma cannot stand in for any of that, and it cannot create a right to diagnose.

Support staff still need training that makes them more useful under a designated SENCO: Code of Practice literacy, EHCP reading, and a stop at diagnostic theatre. That is a real product. It is not the mandatory award. If a brochure uses SENCO in the title and cannot point to the NPQ or to QTS, treat the title as search demand, not as the job. Read the person spec. Then buy only that. If you are not in a school, this is usually the wrong career entirely.

## Common questions

**Is NASENCO still the mandatory award?**

For new SENCOs from September 2024 the NPQ is the mandatory qualification. People who already hold NASENCO do not need to repeat it.

**Can I diagnose autism after an awareness course?**

No. Diagnosis is a clinical process. Awareness training does not create that right.
